With technology booming faster than ever, it is evident that a lot of things rely on the use of the internet. It has completely changed the way we see the world and interact with one another. Everyone is always on their smartphones and schools have been incorporating the use of laptops for homework assignments. Although there are many pros to this fascinating world of the internet, it is important to know how to practice internet safety.
Have a talk with your child.
The internet is a huge database filled with personal information. Educate your child on the harmful effects and dangers of the internet. There are many different types of people out there that can do harm. Be careful when asked personal questions like social security number, address, credit card information, phone number, etc.
Set guidelines.
Spend time with your kids to teach them how to use the internet appropriately. Agree on which websites your child should be allowed to visit. Verify that these are safe websites for kids to use. Explore the privacy settings or online protection tools to make sure your child is good to go. Remember: Safety is the #1 priority!
Cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is the a form of harassment done through the internet via electronic messages. It has recently become a huge problem in many elementary, middle, and high schools. Always talk to a trusted adult or report it to your school if it happens to you or you witness it happening to someone else. #SayNoToBullying
Social Media.
Many popular social media sites such as Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook have shaped the way we communicate and share things with one another. Whether it’s posting a status or uploading pictures, make sure you understand the risks of it. Once information is put out on the internet, it is there forever.
Don’t get scared! The internet is a magical place where you can learn many things and also have fun. Various areas such as medicine, education, and the arts have adopted technology to create wonderful innovations for people to benefit from. Just remember to always take precaution and be safe while doing so.
